STRATOS

a new hospitality experience
NOT A HOTEL International Competition
Yakushima, Japan
2026

They say Yakushima was once guarded by a creature older than stone, that swallowed time and released it in different shapes. Trees grew through its ribs, rivers dripped from its spine, and moss covered its eyelids until no one could tell where the creature ended and the island began. 

Time revealed itself only to those heroes who dared the journey crossing the creature’s body, passing in through its butt and all the way to the breath of its great mouth.

Something appears in the distance. The call for adventure begins!


The skin of Stratos is thick and layered, buzzing with other creatures feeding from it.
Underneath, a porous layer drains water into its hidden veins, carried by solid matter and steel bones.



Dissociation - The low, cavernous entry space opens unexpectedly into a wider chamber. The ceiling is punctured by scattered openings, letting daylight fall unevenly and disorienting. A massive rock sits at the center, anchoring the space without defining direction. All the past is left behind. 


 


  

The hero withdraws into his dream chamber where the outside fades away. 
Focus turns inward, tuning to deep time. How long has he been here? Just few hours? Months?

Daily rituals take place with intention. The ordinary is no longer automatic.



The known world reappears. The hero meets the craving for comfort and social buzz with calm. He finds his balance without surrender.


The ordeal of the journey.
Movement replaces certainty and the Unknown unfolds fully.


Spa - the space where the body becomes the ingredient for deep time fermentation.
Changing and washing act as a mental reset. 

Then, your body is contained in the large ceramic vessel, partially burried in the ground, like mash in a shōchū pot. The heat chamber activates the body, before a return to the bath brings stabilization. 




And then you resurface... Stratos yawns and closes his huge mouth. The hero has accomplished his journey and is ready now for a new start.
